How to Clean Install Windows 11 Step by Step

How to Clean Install Windows 11 Step by Step

A clean install is the nuclear option for preinstalled bloat, mystery toolbars, and five years of cruft — sometimes the best option. Set aside an afternoon, back up files, and accept you will reinstall apps manually.

Preparation checklist

  • Back up files to external drive and verify you can open them.
  • Export browser bookmarks and saved passwords to manager.
  • Screenshot or save software licence keys (email searches help).
  • Download Media Creation Tool from microsoft.com — not random ISO mirrors.
  • Note laptop model; bookmark manufacturer driver page.
  • Create Windows recovery USB before wiping — belt and braces.

Install steps

8 GB+ USB, flash with Media Creation Tool. Boot from USB (F12/F2/Del). Delete all partitions on target drive (careful — wrong drive = data loss). Install to unallocated space. Skip Microsoft account tricks on Home if you prefer local account during setup (network disconnect workaround varies by version).

Post-install order (do not skip)

  1. Windows Update until no critical pending — may take multiple reboots.
  2. Chipset drivers from AMD/Intel — not optional on laptops.
  3. GPU drivers — NVIDIA/AMD/Intel direct.
  4. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, touchpad from laptop OEM support page.
  5. Browser, password manager, then daily apps.

Declutter during setup

Decline Xbox, Candy Crush, and optional telemetry where possible. Unpin unwanted Start menu tiles. Install PowerToys. Keep Defender on. Restore files from backup — do not migrate entire old Users folder blindly (brings bloat back).
