NVMe M.2: PCIe interface, 2000–7000 MB/s reads — new builds and most laptops 2018+. SATA 2.5": ~500 MB/s — fits older laptops via DVD bay caddy or existing HDD bay. External USB SSD: portable, not boot drive on most PCs without effort.
Choosing capacity
500 GB tight for Windows + apps + one game. 1 TB sensible default 2026. 2 TB for video editors and large Steam libraries. Leave 15–20% free for wear levelling and Windows updates.
Clone vs clean install
Clone (Macrium Reflect, Samsung Data Migration) — copies Windows as-is, bloat included, fastest path. Clean install — fresh Windows, no old problems, more work. Shrink source partition if target smaller than source.
Physical install tips
Desktop: M.2 slot often under heatsink — check manual for screw size. Laptop: anti-static precaution, single-sided drives for thin slots. After install: verify TRIM enabled (automatic Win 10/11), update SSD firmware from manufacturer tool.
What speed gain to expect
HDD → SATA SSD: night and day everywhere. SATA → NVMe: faster boot and large file copies; daily web browsing feels similar. RAM still matters for tab count — SSD does not fix 4 GB RAM on Chrome.
