One cable from laptop to dock, everything else plugged into the dock — that is the clean-desk dream. Reality: USB-C ports vary wildly in capability, and cheap docks omit wattage, dual-display support, or stable drivers.
Decoding the specs
- Power Delivery (PD): 65 W minimum for ultrabooks; 90–100 W for 15" workstations. Underpowered docks slowly drain battery under load.
- Display support: one HDMI might mean single monitor only — read dual 4K fine print (often requires Thunderbolt).
- Ethernet: real gigabit chip — some hubs claim Ethernet but use USB 2.0 bridge capped at slow speeds.
- USB ports: count peripherals — keyboard, mouse, webcam, audio interface, external drive.

Troubleshooting dock issues
Update dock firmware from manufacturer. Try different USB-C port on laptop — not all ports wired equally. Disable USB selective suspend in Windows power settings if devices drop. One monitor flicker — often cable quality; swap DisplayPort vs HDMI.
