Chrome extensions can supercharge your browser or slow it to a crawl and sell your browsing history. These twelve are lightweight, privacy-respecting, and installed on every new profile I set up — in this order.
The essential twelve
- uBlock Origin — block ads and trackers; pages load faster; lower RAM use.
- Bitwarden — autofill passwords; disable Chrome password manager after.
- OneTab — collapse tab hoard into a list; restores later.
- Dark Reader — dark mode on sites without native support.
- LanguageTool or Grammarly — pick one for writing; not both.
- GoFullPage — full-page screenshots for docs and bug reports.
- Video Speed Controller — 1.5× on tutorials saves hours monthly.
- ClearURLs — strip tracking parameters from copied links.
- SingleFile — save complete web page as one HTML file.
- React/Vue devtools — if you develop web apps only.
Permissions audit
Review chrome://extensions quarterly. Remove anything with "Read and change all your data on all websites" unless you trust the author and use it weekly. New tab hijackers often arrive bundled with free PDF converters — uninstall immediately.
Performance tips
Each extension runs background scripts — ten "small" extensions equal one heavy app. If Chrome feels sluggish, disable half, restart, re-enable one by one. Consider separate Chrome profiles for work vs personal to isolate extension sets.
