How to Speed Up a Slow PC (Without Buying Anything)

How to Speed Up a Slow PC (Without Buying Anything)

Before you replace a sluggish machine, work through these fixes in order. Most slow PCs I troubleshoot are drowning in startup programs, nearly full SSDs, or browser tab overload — not suffering from CPUs too weak for the task.

Phase 1: quick wins (30 minutes)

  • Task Manager → Startup — disable high-impact items you do not recognise (keep audio, GPU, touchpad).
  • Settings → Apps — uninstall bloat you never opened.
  • Free 15%+ space on C: — move videos, old ISOs, Downloads graveyard to external drive.
  • Disk Cleanup → include Windows Update Cleanup after patches.
  • Browser: disable extensions; clear cache if only browser feels slow.

Phase 2: deeper diagnosis

Task Manager Performance tab during slowness — disk at 100% suggests HDD failure or SATA SSD saturation; RAM maxed suggests too many tabs or need upgrade; CPU pegged on one app — update or replace that app. Windows Defender offline scan if malware suspected. Check Event Viewer for disk errors warning of imminent drive death.

Phase 3: targeted upgrades

HDD boot drive → SSD: biggest perceptual speed jump on earth. 8 GB RAM → 16 GB on Windows 11. Reinstall Windows clean if years of cruft — see our clean install guide.

When to stop tweaking

Mechanical boot drive, 4 GB RAM, CPU constantly 100% on basic tasks — software tweaks hit hardware walls. See SSD upgrade guide for best pound-per-second improvement.
